While the poll was designed for the Back to Middle-earth Month moderators to have an idea of what participants want in the future, we thought you might like to have a summary of some of the data.

68 people took the poll, 35 of whom participated in B2MeM this year. Of those 35, nine people were new to B2MeM! The majority of people followed the prompts on Dreamwidth, though 17% preferred following them on Tumblr. Just under three-fourths of participants used the Dreamwidth community to participate, though most people used multiple sites such as AO3, Tumblr, and SWG. A slim minority participated only in B2MeM, while a slim majority participated in more than one fandom event in February, March, or April.

Please contact us at b2mem.mod@gmail.com if you want to see the raw data.

We want to reiterate our appreciation for taking the poll! Thank you! If you want a response to your feedback or to discuss an idea, please contact us at b2mem.mod@gmail.com.

This winter, keep an eye on this Dreamwidth, Livejournal, or Tumblr for information about our 2019 event. We hope to see you there!

Our Back to Middle-earth Month poll closes tomorrow April 16 at 8 AM Eastern. We'd love to hear from you if you participated this year, if you participated in previous years but not this year, or if you haven't participated at all but are interested in doing so in the future.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about anything (not just the poll!), please email us at b2mem.mod@gmail.com.

We want to thank everyone who participated in Back to Middle-earth Month 2018. This was our first year using Dreamwidth as a platform, and we are glad that our first year in our new online home was a success!

We had over 25 people post nearly 100 fanworks across at least three platforms: the B2MeM comm on Dreamwidth, AO3, and SWG.

In order to keep the event a success, we’re interested to know what we can improve on for next year. To that end, we made a short poll we’d like you to answer. The poll will close on April 16 at 8 AM Eastern.

We also want to thank our moderators: Independence1776, Zdenka, Linaewen, DawnFelagund, and Angelica_Ramses, as well as our tagging volunteer Just_jenni.

The Music of the Waters prompts-- both fanwork and comment-- will remain available for use year-round. If you’re still working on a project (or two or three or…), you are welcome to post them in the Dreamwidth community, the AO3 collection, and whatever archives and sites you normally use whenever you’re done with them.

We hope to see you again next year!

Fanwork Prompt:
As their work drew to an end they allowed themselves more and more time for walking about, looking at the trees, and the flowers, and the lights and shapes, and the lie of the land. Sometimes they sang together; but Niggle found that he was now beginning to turn his eyes, more and more often, towards the Mountains. (Leaf by Niggle)

Comment Prompt:
To the Sea: Comment on a fanwork that includes a river or the ocean.

(If you wish to report that you have completed this comment challenge, please comment in this post to say you've done so. Reporting is not required.)

Fanwork Prompt:
I lay by waters once in a garden dim
Which could enfold
The stars in sleep, and where the golden day
In lovely image lay;
But laid all these away and took instead
This broken mirror and this world grown old,
And this unquiet darkness deep with dread,
To be my heritage.
(Mary Stewart, “Cain”)

Comment Prompt:
Music of the Ainur: Comment on a fanwork that is three or more years old.

(If you wish to report that you have completed this comment challenge, please comment in this post to say you’ve done so. Reporting is not required.)

Fanwork Prompt:
...mariners and men forlorn upon the water who, by some fate or grace or favour of the Valar, had entered in upon the Straight Way and seen the face of the world sink below them, and so had come to the lamplit quays of Avallónë, or verily to the last beaches on the margin of Aman, and there had looked upon the White Mountain, dreadful and beautiful, before they died. (The Silmarillion, “Akallabeth”)

Comment Prompt:
Bucklebury Ferry: Cross into an unfamiliar realm and comment on a fanwork featuring a character, time period, or topic you don't usually view or read about.

(If you wish to report that you have completed this comment challenge, please comment in this post to say you've done so. Reporting is not required.)

Fanwork Prompt:
There Bredhil the Blessed     the bluemantled,
the Lady of the heights     as lovely as the snow
in lights gleaming     of the legions of the stars,
the cold immortal     Queen of mountains,
too fair and terrible     too far and high
for mortal eyes,     in Manwë’s court
sat silently     as they sang to her.
(Lays of Beleriand, “The Flight of the Noldoli from Valinor”)

Comment Prompt:
Tinfang Warble: Comment on a fanwork that is a poem, playlist, or song, or that includes poetry or music (e.g., a fanwork with a song or playlist).

Fanwork Prompt:
Bright is the ring of words
When the right man rings them,
Fair the fall of songs
When the singer sings them.
Still they are carolled and said --
On wings they are carried --
After the singer is dead
And the maker buried.
(Robert Louis Stevenson)

Comment Prompt:
Long live the Halflings: Comment on a fanwork that includes a holiday or celebration.

Fanwork Prompt:
They stooped over the dark water. At first they could see nothing. Then slowly they saw the forms of the encircling mountains mirrored in a profound blue, and the peaks were like plumes of white flame above them; beyond there was a space of sky. There like jewels sunk in the deep shone glinting stars, though sunlight was in the sky above. Of their own stooping forms no shadow could be seen.

‘O Kheled-zâram fair and wonderful!’ said Gimli. ‘There lies the Crown of Durin till he wakes. Farewell!’ (The Fellowship of the Ring, “Lothlórien”)

Comment Prompt:
Anduin the Great: Comment of a fanwork that is more than 3000 words.

Fanwork Prompt:
There came a time near dawn on the eve of spring, and Lúthien danced upon a green hill; and suddenly she began to sing. Keen, heart-piercing was her song as the song of the lark that rises from the gates of night and pours its voice among the dying stars, seeing the sun behind the walls of the world; and the song of Lúthien released the bonds of winter, and the frozen waters spoke, and flowers sprang from the cold earth where her feet had passed. (The Silmarillion, “Of Beren and Lúthien”)

Comment Prompt:
The Ford of Bruinen: You have no idea what you’re getting into, but people you trust tell you to go there so … comment on a fanwork based on a recommendation or from a rec list.

Fanwork Prompt:
Create a fanwork inspired by one or more of the following musical terms. You can use the mood, the literal or figurative meaning, a different meaning of the word, or anything else you like.

  • Accent: Emphasize, make a particular part more important.

  • Brio (Italian: vivacity, fire or energy) appears as an instruction to performers; for example, allegro con brio, meaning fast with brilliance and fire.

  • Crescendo: Growing (i.e. progressively louder).

  • Divisi: Divided (i.e. in a part in which several musicians normally play exactly the same notes they are instead to split the playing of the written simultaneous notes among themselves).

  • Elegy: An elegy (French: élégie) is a lament, either vocal or instrumental.

  • Grave (Italian: slow, solemn) is used as an indication of tempo and mood, meaning slow and serious.

  • Harmony: The simultaneous combination of tones, especially when blended into chords pleasing to the ear; chordal structure, as distinguished from melody and rhythm.

  • Hymn: A hymn is a song of praise, whether to a god, saint or hero.

  • Morendo: Dying (i.e. dying away in dynamics, and perhaps also in tempo).

  • Subito: Suddenly (e.g. subito pp, which instructs the player to suddenly drop to pianissimo as an effect).

  • Tranquillo: Calmly, peacefully.

  • Virtuoso: (Noun or adjective) performing with exceptional ability, technique, or artistry.
