Grishnâkh's Moment



Grishnâk smiled; here was his chance he'd waited for. A long time it's been, since he saw that little sniffler shrieking in the Tower, since he'd overheard words he'd not been meant to overhear. They'd have flayed him if they'd known. Not for the likes of him to overhear.

But if he could get...It. Why else would Saruman risk the wrath of the Eye? No lesser prize would he have risked all for. He looked at the little rat in his grasp as it said...gollum, gollum He wasn't that one-- but clearly he knew something. This was Grishnâk's golden chance…

I don't think I've ever seen a story address the origin of Grishnakh's knowledge! What a great juxtaposition, with Pippin and Merry playing right into his assumptions, and spurring him on to put all the pieces together.
