Summary: Two of my favorite tropes: hurt/comfort and Elves in history.
1. Hurt/comfort
While this is more of a genre of fic than a trope, it’s one that I’m insatiable for. I read pretty much anything ranging from light and fluffy to torture porn. There’s just something about seeing a character I love hurt and then being taken care of. (I'm listing only three because there are so many goods ones, and these are the ones that sprang to mind.)
~ Perchance to Dream by TheGrayTigress. Two years after the War of the Ring, a surprise attack on Cair Andros pits Legolas, Aragorn, and Faramir against a ruthless tyrant. All of Gondor is plunged into a brutal war with a cunning and violent adversary, and only their strength and faith in each other can save them. There’s a lot more going on here than simple hurt/comfort. Rated Mature; 409,000 words; warnings are spoilers so I'm not giving them. Here be dragons, in other words. (This is the first Tolkien fic I ever read and it’s what catapulted me into the fandom. I was absolutely ecstatic to discover it had been reposted.)
~ SurgicalSteel’s The King’s Surgeon and its Happy AU. The life and adventures of a surgeon in the late Third and early Fourth Ages of Middle-earth, from south to north and back again. They’re both rated R/Mature. The former is 250,000+ words and the latter is nearly 625,000 words.
~ The Mellon Chronicles by Cassia and Siobhan. Aragorn and Legolas gen, series, 36 stories. Ratings don’t go above R/Mature and most are lower rated. (Caveat: I have not read these fics in years, but I’m listing them because I adored them in my early years in the fandom.)
2. Elves in history
This is, hands-down, my favorite thing to read in the fandom. I love reading about Elves who have lived through history from the First (or Third) Age on to the present day. Something about all the history, the past, the knowledge that person has: it’s a feeling that’s hard to find in other fics. The danger of being discovered as something other than mortal draws me in, too. My favorite Elf to read about is Maglor, but I’ll read stories involving pretty much anyone.
~ Elleth’s The Kindness of Strangers and its sequel What's Real, What's Stranger. Maglor meets a stranger on the beach and makes some important discoveries. Gen; rated General; 4000 words combined.
~ Fíramar by Ithilwen. Do the Elves in Aman ever look back at Middle Earth? Gen; rated General; 900 words. A different take on the trope.
~ Trinity by Pandemonium_213. Three scientists discuss technology and responsibility in the Jornada del Muerto Valley on July 19, 1945. Gen; rated Teens; 5000 words.
~ For Every Evil by Mirrordance. Legolas is a policeman in 2004. Though life's fallen into routine by now, he knows there's trouble ahead when he runs across the Fellowship and some old friends (and foes!) in new incarnations… First of a trilogy; the others are named similarly. Rated Teens; 154k words.
~ A Glorious Tradition by Lyra. Maglor, Daeron, and kilts. Gen; 700 words.
~ Captain Tinkerbell by Lipstick. Maglor is in the British trenches in WW1, and he gets to meet a certain young officer with a liking for ancient mythology. Gen; rated General; 2200 words.

Date: 2015-03-30 10:41 pm (UTC)I already knew Captain Tinkerbell, and it is a thing of beauty, but A Glorious Tradition was new to me and it is absolutely fucking delightful, and actually fits in so perfectly with something else I'm currently writing (my self-insert wish fulfilment fantasy where I meet Maglor & Daeron) that I may just have to make a reference to it in that fic.

Date: 2015-03-31 02:17 pm (UTC)I'm glad you found a new one and that it's left such an impression on you! (I think Lyra would love hearing that; I'm not sure she'll see your comment here.)

Date: 2015-03-31 02:19 pm (UTC)As for PtD… If by wonderful you mean: stayed up far too late reading multiple times and cryed my eyes out at least once the first time I read it, then yes, it's wonderful. :D It's one of the fics I wish I had in physical form to put on my bookshelf.

Date: 2015-04-06 06:30 am (UTC)But I remember reading Perchance to Dream years ago on a site that has gone; and being saddened that the story was lost as well. Thank you for rediscovering it! (great h/c scenes!)

Date: 2015-04-06 06:32 pm (UTC)You're very welcome! It was pure serendipity, too. I was looking on the Avengers fic rec comm (for what, I can't even remember at this point) and someone recommended a couple of fics by an author. I thought they sounded interesting, so I clicked the link to the author's bio, skimmed the fic listing, and paused when I saw "Perchance to Dream." My usual leaping-heart moment whenever I saw that title (because I lived in hope) and knew it wasn't PtD because it never was-- only to read the summary, go "Wait a minute," and checked my copy/pasted PtD (which I lived in fear I'd lose). Same summary. Same first paragraphs. Cue utter, utter glee.
