Unprepared

“Prepared? Was I prepared for this voyage? How little I knew about the waters separating us from Valinor! I have spent months lost among the Enchanted Isles, and each time I’ve thought I’ve found a passage between two of them or a way around them as a whole instead I’ve found myself right back where we started, facing the same false harbor. Currents that travel westward at dawn take the ship back eastward as noon approaches. Only now, with the light of the Silmaril shining its light upon the proper path am I able to find my way properly west.”

Oh, I like this so much!! But poor Earendil, lost for so long...

Indeed! He had to search so long to find the way until Elwing brought the Silmaril to him.

I don't think I ever thought to consider how difficult that journey would have been. Tolkien tells us about it so briefly. But he must have been a very strong willed person to have kept on trying.

Indeed Earendil appears to have been singularly persistent in his intent. It is only too sad that he and his wife were barred from returning to their sons and people.

He was so brave and stubborn to keep on trying! It was such a dangerous thing to try, as well. But all the while what he needed to succeed was at home.

At least Elwing was able to bring it to him, although it cost them both the company of their children.

I really can't imagine spending what was probably years lost at sea... *shudders* Who could be prepared for that?
