B2MeM Prompt and Path: Fanworks recs: Favorite book (yellow path)
Format: rec list
Genre: gen
Rating: various
Warnings: various
Characters: various
Pairings: none
Creator’s Notes (optional): The Silmarillion is my favorite book to write from, but after all I think The Lord of the Rings is my favorite book to reread.
Summary: Three artworks and three fics featuring characters and settings from The Lord of the Rings. They’re all gen but don’t have much in common otherwise.
Horse Maiden by DachOsmin
Format: art
Genre: gen
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Characters: Éowyn
Pairings: none
Summary: Éowyn with sword and armor.
I enjoyed this piece when I saw it during last year’s Trick or Treat Exchange. I like the bright colors and the texturing on the chain mail. Eowyn looks suitably strong and determined.
A Hole in the Ground by shadowycat
Format: art
Genre: gen
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Characters: none
Pairings: none
Summary: A cozy home in the side of a hill. :D
A drawing of the outside of a hobbit hole. It’s beautiful and bright and cheerful -- I could imagine a hobbit family living here very happily!
The Departure of Boromir by thewildernessyears
Format: art
Genre: gen
Rating: PG
Warnings: character death, mild violence
Characters: Boromir
Pairings: none
Summary: A collage piece of Boromir as he falls protecting the hobbits. Magazines + scissors + glue.
A beautiful and unusual piece. I like the contrast of the bright colors forming Boromir’s clothing and body with the pale winter landscape.
Waiting on the Wise by rhymer23
(also on MPTT)
Format: short story (6386 words)
Genre: gen, gap filler, angst, drama
Rating: General
Warnings: none
Characters: Boromir, Pippin, Merry, Gandalf
Pairings: none
Summary: Boromir endured much hardship on his long journey to Rivendell. What comes after, in the quiet and safety of the House of Elrond, could prove yet harder to endure.
This is one of my favorite fics about Boromir. The story captures so much of what I find admirable about him, without making him impossibly perfect, and including the seeds of what will bring trouble later. The author makes his thoughts and actions very understandable, and the ending is just beautiful.
The Last Prince of Cardolan by Serenade
Format: short story (1061 words)
Genre: gen
Rating: G
Warnings: Author chose not to warn
Characters: Barrow-wight(s), Original Male Character(s)
Pairings: none
Summary:The green downs hold many secrets.
An excellently spooky ghost story, but also tragic in how feelings of duty and loyalty become twisted into darkness. The writing is beautiful and very effective in setting the atmosphere.
The Days Before The Days After by TLvop
Format: short story (1844 words)
Genre: gen, folklore
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Characters: Sméagol, Gollum, Aragorn
Pairings: none
Summary: Young Sméagol watched, and he listened; he paid attention to the words people spoke and the clothes that they wore and the places they came from. He held them all in his mind, and thought upon them when he had chance to daydream in the shade of the willow-trees.
A glimpse of Sméagol before he became Gollum, and some of his people’s stories. I love the different strands of story that are woven together here, and the style it’s told in -- I could believe this is what a pre-Ring Sméagol would sound like, and seeing his earlier life makes his later fall all the more sad.
