B2MeM Prompt and Path: Purple path, Wild Card: Complete any prompt from the yellow (three dots) path. The Yellow Path is fanwork reccommendations. I chose “Underappreciated fanworks”.
Format: Reccommendation
Genre: n/a
Rating: n/a
Warnings: n/a
Characters: n/a
Pairings: n/a
Creator’s Notes (optional): In the years since these stories were originally posted, I am sure that there are many new readers who have never encountered these stories. Some of them are the first of their kind. They are still great stories, and they are still worth your time. I also hope that some who remember them fondly will be inspired to revisit them--they are always worth re-reading, as well.
Summary: These are works from authors who are either no longer in the fandom, or no longer write in the fandom very often.
Oldies But Goodies
Work: The North-Delving Incident series: “Overlooked” “Left Undone” and “Following Through”
Author: Dana (lj-user=”danae_b”>
Link: http://www.lotrgfic.com/viewseries.php?seriesid=61
Rating: PG-13 for the first two stories, PG for the last one
Summary: Three stories from three points-of-view about a village in the Northfarthing where a handful of Ruffians managed to hide for a year, overlooked by the scouring, and terrorizing the villagers...until Pippin arrives, unsuspecting and unexpectedly...
Reason for reccommending: I love Dana's work. She has a way of using a very deep POV that puts the reader into not only the characters' heads, but their hearts as well. Also, Dana has a really good handle on the Troubles, as some hobbit-writers dub the Occupation of the Shire. Plus, Pippin gets a chance to show how awesome and heroic he is on his own. The OCs are all quite remarkable as well, and show the courage of hobbits in a pinch.
Dana writes in another fandom now, but I am sure she'd appreciate some new comments on her hobbit stories, which are still close to her heart.
Work: A Secret Gate
Author: Elanor
Link: http://entropyhouse.com/elanor/secretgate.html
Rating: There is no rating given, and while nothing beyone what I would call “G” occurs, the themes are often adult, dealing with aging, loss, and the inevitable changes of life. So I would suggest PG, or T.
Summary: In the spring of the year a message came from Rohan to Buckland that King Eomer wished to see Master Holdwine once again. Meriadoc was then old (102) but still hale. He took counsel with his friend the Thain, and soon after they handed over their goods and offices to their sons and rode away over Sarn Ford, and they were not seen again in the Shire. It was heard after that Master Meriadoc came to Edoras and was with King Eomer before he died that autumn. Then he and Thain Peregrin went to Gondor and passed what short years were left to them in that realm, until they died and were laid in Rath Dinen among the great of Gondor.
Reason for reccommending: Do you like Merry Brandybuck as a character? Have you ever wondered at the course of his life as Master of Buckland? Do you like amazing worldbuilding and well-rounded OCs ? Do you love lyrical language and descriptive prose? For all these reasons and more, this is probably my very favorite multi-chapter hobbit-fic ever.
Although the story is incomplete, it is very close to the ending, and it is worth the read even if Elanor never does finish. But perhaps new readers appreciating her brilliant and unique view of the Shire during the Fourth Age will draw her forth to finish up the little that is left.
Work: The Care and Feeding of Hobbits
Author: Baylor
Link: http://www.storiesofarda.com/chapterlistview.asp?SID=221
Rating: G
Summary: A series of events during the Quest, as the Big Folk learn about their smaller companions.
Reason for reccommending: For those of us who have been reading fanfic for 14 years, this story is famous. It is the direct ancestor of all those “getting to know you fics” and the origin of the hobbit pile and a number of other popular fanons in hobbit fanfic. But I am sure there are many younger readers who have never encountered this series of wonderful and sweet vignettes, giving us insight into the personalities of the hobbits and those who accompanied them, most especially Boromir.
If you've never read this seminal fanfic, it's a classic, and not to be missed.
Work: If I Had a Hammer
Author: Grey Wonderer
Link: http://www.storiesofarda.com/chapterlistview.asp?SID=4022
Rating: G
Summary: Seventeen-year-old Pippin is taking lessons from Tobias Tunnely in carpentry over the summer but things don't go as planned. Sam Gamgee somehow finds himself in the middle of things while Frodo has his hands full with Merry.
Reason for reccommending: Even though she rarely posts a new story now (and the rare appearance of a new one by her is an EVENT), GW is still the Queen of Hobbit Humor. No one has ever yet surpassed her in the belly laugh category, and I highly recommend anything she's ever posted. This one is a multi-chapter tale, and while not so hilarious in the LOL sense, it's still very funny, while at the same time examining the familial love and friendship between Frodo, Merry, Pippin and Sam. There are growing pains and strained loyalties and jealousies--yet at the same time you never doubt that love or friendship, even though they sometimes do. There are some really funny OCs, and one of the best characterizations of the Gaffer I have ever seen. And, BTW, Sam is an excellent teacher. I've probably read "If I Had a Hammer" a dozen times and I never tire of it.
Do check this story out, and any of her other stories, especially when you are feeling down. I can guarantee you will feel better afterwards.
Work: The Prodigal Took
Author: Lullenny
Link: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/1433620/1/The-Prodigal-Took
Rating: K+
Summary: Pippin rides to Tookland to lead an army of Tooks to Bywater.
Reason for reccommending: This is the story that started it all for me, the story that inspired me to write my own fanfiction. It's a bittersweet story of Pippin's arrival at the Great Smials to help rouse the Tooks to ride against the Ruffians who had occupied the Shire.
His reunion with his family is not altogether as happy as he thought. There is friction between him and his father, and events have occurred in his family that he had never expected. It inspired me to write my first story when I didn't even know what to do with it or how to post it. Lullenny was kind enough to help me. She beta'd the story and encouraged me to post it. I will always be grateful to her for that.
This story is another classic, and if you are among newer readers who have never come across it before, I urge you to go check it out!
