The two brothers sat at the fireside each with one twin next to him. Maglor had Elros curled up next to him, Maedhros had Elrond. The boys were relaxing after a busy day and a fresh-caught meal of fish. The four of them, with a few guards accompanying them, had been tracking deer for most of the day, and had then spent a couple of hours casting lines in a swift brook, catching trout for dinner. Following the game trails through the foothills and meadows of the Blue Mountains was hard work and the elfling’s were tired, nodding off as they sat there.
"It's time for sleep, boys," Maglor said, attempting to convince them all to move to the lean-to tents for the night.
"No, it's too early, isn't it Adar?" Elrond asked, trying to wheedle a few more minutes at the fire with his Adar and Atar.
Maedhros spoke. "Why don't we go around the fire and we each tell what our favorite time of the day is and why. After that, we'll all go to sleep. I'll start."
Three sets of eyes moved to the Fëanorean. "My favorite time of the day is the dawn. I love the movement of the dawn's colors as the promised day gains strength and I love the fact that I'll break our fast with my brother and our favorite boys before I settle down and rest for a few hours."
"My turn, my turn," cried out Elros, until Maglor's hand clapped over his mouth.
"Quiet, remember? You'll frighten all of the deer away if you're loud."
"Oh, yeah! Sorry, Atar."
Maglor kissed him on the forehead. "You were excited. It's all right, but now you'll remember, right?" The young elfling nodded his head in agreement. "Now, you wanted to go next? Go ahead."
"My favorite time is the afternoon, right after lunch. We're through with lessons and we can practice with swords and bows and arrows for the afternoon. It's the BEST!"
The older elves chuckled listening to Elros' enthusiasm. Across the fire, his twin shook his head in a resigned manner. It certainly wasn't the first time he heard his brother's enthusiasm about the weapons part of their education.
"My turn now," Maglor said. I like the late afternoon. Maedhros is awake and watching over the cook fire, so I have some free time to work with my music for a few hours. I can sing, play my harp, make a new flute, compose a melody or just listen to the birdsongs around me."
"Elrond, it's your turn now. What is your favorite time of day?"
"My favorite time of day is evening, when the sun is going down and the stars are just coming out. It's our quiet time. Sometimes Adar Maedhros will tell us a story or Atar Maglor will sing us a song. It's so peaceful. Then we go to bed and get goodnight kisses."
Maedhros smiled and kissed the top of the elfling's head. He looked at his brother on the other side of the fire. Their eyes met and their memories of shared times in another land with their own brothers filled their thoughts for a short time.
