Creator’s Notes (optional):
Summary: A rec collection that probably seems rather random to anyone but me - these are some of the stories that just seem to have stuck in my head over the years, for quite different reasons.
Where the Shadows Lie, by Clotho123
Genre: Horror
Rating: Teens
Warnings: Horror themes, insanity, attempted suicide
Characters: Maglor
Pairings: None
Summary: A dark exploration of what might have happened if Maglor had submitted to the Valar after the War of Wrath.
- This story is just deliciously eerie and dark, and gives the Oath a whole new dimension with sinister consequences for everyone involved.
The Loneliness of the Fishermouse by Clodia
Genre: Drama
Rating: Teens
Warnings: Major Character Death, Grief
Characters: Erestor, Elrond, Glorfindel, Arwen, Lindir, Galadriel, Celeborn, Celebrian, OC
Pairings: Past Erestor/OC
Summary: In 2509, Celebrían wife of Elrond was journeying to Lórien... the rest, everyone knows. But this isn't about her. Not really. What remains for the bereaved but need and anger?
- I can't think of many other stories that have made me cry this hard. It is brutally honest in dealing with the consequences of loss, and incredibly well written. Do thread carefully if you decide to read, bring tissues and don't expect any kind of clean resolution - but honestly, it's worth it.
Flights of Fancy by Ithilwen
Genre: AU, Humor, General
Rating: General
Warnings: None
Characters: Finrod, OC
Pairings: None
Summary: "And thence at times the Firstborn still would come sailing to Númenor in oarless boats… And they brought to Númenor many gifts: birds of song, and fragrant flowers, and herbs of great virtue." (Akallabêth). Ever wonder what the Elves of Tol Eressëa might have brought back from those sightseeing trips? AU for some deliberately added anachronisms.
- This is a very amusing little story and very well worth the read, but what really stayed with me is the meta that it comes with; something that I want to do more with, someday.
The Spoils of War by Aearwen
Genre: Drama
Rating: Adult
Warnings: Disturbing verbal imagery, suggested violence, references to past sexual and physical abuse and slavery
Characters: OC-centric
Pairings: None
Summary: In Mirkwood, at the end of the War of the Ring, a stranger in a strange land struggles to find a new place among beings taught to be fearsome and cruel.
- I am usually a little reluctant around OC-heavy stories - I don't think there is anything wrong with them (far from it, I write them often enough after all) but personally, I often have trouble getting engaged. This gem drew me in right away, and has some of my favourite original characters to date.
The World Below the Mists by ThunderaTiger
Genre: Drama
Rating: General
Warnings: Referenced character death
Characters: Elrond, Erestor, Glorfindel, Landroval, Elrohir
Pairings: None
Summary: Early one winter's morning, an eagle came to Imladris bearing dark tidings from Lothlórien, for news of Gandalf's death affected more than just the grieving Fellowship.
- My favourite Glorfindel of Gondolin = Glorfindel of Imladris story. A great gapfiller, with spot-on characterisations and some interesting ruminations about the nature of foresight and the influence of the Three on their wearers.

Date: 2017-04-01 02:32 am (UTC)The Loneliness of the Fishermouse (I can't think of any other fic that deals with the deaths of Celebrian's travel party, and so deeply, so intensely), and The World Below the Mists! (I love well-written Glorfindel every time, and this is excellent.)
