Summary: Thranduil meets a little girl during the bubonic plague epidemic of the mid-1300s
In the end, Thranduil had become one with his Wood, more or less. If he still had a heart, it beat in time with the trees: each stroke a season, thoughts ebbing and flowing along centuries.
“Excuse me, sir? Have you any food?” The piping voice drew him from his reverie, but he did not at once guess it was he whom she addressed. No Men could perceive him any longer except those whose spirits already clung but loosely to their bodies. “Sir?” Why had she ventured so far into his domain?
She bowed clumsily in his direction. “Forgive me, sir--it is only that Mam and Da and Mary have all gone, and--I know how to make the porridge, but I cannot light the fire by myself, and there is nothing else in the house to eat.” She'd gone days at least, by the look of her, before risking the deep forest. And he sensed not another soul nearby--she undoubtedly addressed him.
Well, farbeit from him to act the poor host. He gestured for her to follow--even those who saw him could rarely hear his voice. He knew of some blackberries over yonder that had just come to ripeness.
