It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door. You step into the Road, and if you don't keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to.
Throughout the month, we will offer weekly wildcard days, days when there are no new prompts but instead a simple, Tolkien-related task, for those who wish to participate. We hope wildcard days will give you a chance to refresh your muses, read, catch up on your WiPs, and breathe! :)
Our first wildcard day task: Step out your front door.
B2MeM is an event for the entire Tolkien fandom. Just look at what's been posted so far! All three major books are represented and characters ranging from Bilbo to Balrogs, Finrod to Faramir. Because of our diversity, though, we may not all know each other and we may define ourselves more by the communities from which we come rather than viewing B2MeM as itself a community. So, today, step out from your front door. Say hello and meet someone new. Lean out, take a look down the road, and ponder where it leads.
He used often to say there was only one Road; that it was like a great river: its springs were at every doorstep, and every path was its tributary.
To participate, leave a comment here and introduce yourself. Tell us the name you go by, what your passion is in fandom, and anything else about yourself that you want to share. Then, share a link to your favorite of the fanworks that you've created. (If you're new and don't have any fanworks yet, feel free to share a link to your favorite work by another author or artist.) The link you share does not have to be to a B2MeM piece; please make sure you include appropriate ratings and warnings if this won't be apparent when visitors click on the link.
After you've introduced yourself, take a moment to read/view another person's fanwork and leave them a comment to say hi and tell them what you thought.

Date: 2013-03-03 07:06 am (UTC)I am a hobbit fan and I enjoy reading hobbit fan fiction. I also like reading stories based on "The Hobbit" that involve the dwarves of Thorin's company.
Although I have written a few things, I don't enjoy recommending my own stuff, so I'm going to recommend someone else's work, since the instructions above give me the option to do that.
The story is a multi-chaptered, post-Quest, Lord of the Rings-based, g-rated, story with Merry Brandybuck and Pippin Took as the two central characters. The author has started her lovely story at the point where Merry receives word that King Eomer is ill and is requesting to see him one more time before he dies.
The story reads like a continuation of Tolkien's own work, and to this point, is faithful to the original. There are many OC's, including a wonderful young hobbit lad named Jamy and there are familiar characters from Tolkien's world as well. This is a story in progress, so if you decide to read it, keep in mind that the author, Elanor, is still working on it. It's called "A Secret Gate" and here is the link to the chapter list page. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Happy reading and happy B2ME month!

Date: 2013-03-03 07:26 am (UTC)I'm Kaylee Arafinwiel, or just Kaylee (or Kaylee Tonks-Lupin, in HP fandom, hence the LJ name, though I've mostly let my HP-ness go).
My passion, in the main, is Elves of all Ages and realms - particularly Doriath and Greenwood, and my favourites are Thranduil, Galadriel, Oropher, Celeborn and Legolas in that order. I am also fond of Gondor and Arnor, Rohan, Dwarven realms and the Shire, though I find Shire-fic and Dwarf-fic especially difficult to write. (By extension, Questfic is incredibly hard.)
It seems, however, that the central character for my B2MEM will be Rushirithir. For those of you who do not know me or my previous fics well, Rushirithir ("Fire-Light" in Valarin, as Fiondil translated) is my name for the Balrog of Moria. The fic where I originally explored his character was first posted on the lotr_community "Outside the Box" challenge for 2010, where it was called "The Life and Times of Rushirithir". I have reposted and slightly edited it on The Lizard Council, where it is simply "Rushirithir". http://lizardcouncil.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=arafinwielsanthology&action=display&thread=2360
Rushirithir, or "Rushy" for short (as my gwathel Sparx nicknamed him), has become one of my favourite characters to write. The first B2MEM 2013 bit about Rushy, "Three Maiar Walk Into A Bar..." is in the comments here: http://b2mem.livejournal.com/200004.html#comments and the second one is posted properly on the group, here. http://b2mem.livejournal.com/201754.html You might have seen them both already.
"Three Maiar Walk Into A Bar..." also vaguely refers back to "Not All Who Wander Are Lost..." my 2010 MEFA third place winner (and very first fic I ever won any kind of award for), here: http://www.lotrgfic.com/viewstory.php?sid=714 though you don't really have to have read it to enjoy it, I think.
Anyway, I love Fiondil's characterisation of the Maiar and Valar, and I have written them into other fics over the few years I've been involved in fandom. So I'm quite happy to play with Rushy for as long as he wants me to. ^_^
...was I just supposed to leave one link? hopefully a number of related links isn't overkill.
Oh yes - before I stop rambling a little tiny bit more about me. I'm nearly 28, American by birth and Anglophile by choice, though I have plenty of the 'old country' blood running through me :P (my grandfather was born in Cheshire in 1910 :) ) someday I want to live in the UK. The Hobbit part 1 is one of my favourite films ever and I have seen it twice. LOTR is my next favourite collectively and I think the Silmarillion/UT should form the basis of a TV series. I'm the only person in my immediate family who is into Tolkien fandom and many of my RL friends have the same sad issue :( I feel very alone until I switch on the computer, so...love you all =)
Hope I didn't talk too much...

Date: 2013-03-03 08:20 am (UTC)Elves are my obsession, specifically Elrond (which came as a surprise to me), Maglor, Finrod, and Fingolfin. Numenor has been creeping its way into my heart lately, too.
I don't have any work of my own I want to recommend. My list of favorites is pretty long, too, but my current beloved read is Anadûnai (http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/archive/home/viewstory.php?sid=631) by Darth Fingon, which hit at the heart of so many of the painful topics tied up with Elros and Elrond I'm interested in, while also cracking me up, as many of this author's stories do. There's a lot I like about it, which I should probably save for a review.
I'm sorry not to be more detailed now that I see everyone else's posts! I was hit with a surprise hand injury today, and that makes participating... complicated.

Date: 2013-03-03 11:38 am (UTC)I write under the name Amy Fortuna and I'm passionate about pretty much everything to do with Middle-earth and Tolkien. I'm more of a book fan than a movies fan - I enjoyed the movies and certainly do read fic about them, but they're like big-budget fanfic themselves to me - and I really like exploring the details and corners of the world Tolkien created. My preference is for slashfic and rarer ships. I think I may be the only person who has ever written Luthien/Galadriel.
My favourite of my own fanworks is a story I wrote a few years back for 3 Ships (a threesome fanfic exchange) with Aragorn/Boromir/Legolas. Unfortunately my recipient defaulted, but I was very happy with the story I'd written: Ever Northward Gaze (http://archiveofourown.org/works/321058) (rated M).
I also want to recommend the fic that was written for me in last year's Yuletide - not strictly Middle-earth, but certainly Tolkien - a fanfic for Smith of Wootton Major by Rachel Manija Brown: Queen of Berries (http://archiveofourown.org/works/554986) (rated G).
Really looking forward to seeing what B2MEM produces this year, perhaps if I have a chance or inspiration strikes, there will be something from myself at some point this month.

Date: 2013-03-03 02:02 pm (UTC)I have two of my own works that are dear to my heart that I would like to recommend. "Lords of Gondor" is my epic AU where Boromir survives the battle at Amon Hen and attempts the journey home to Gondor before war with Mordor breaks out. I started writing this one ten years ago, and in recent years have not been very prolific at updating, but I'm still working on it! It's my "life's work," so to speak. The most complete version of LoG can be found here: http://www.henneth-annun.net/stories/chapter.cfm?stid=4815
The other favorite is "Reforged," which is a tale of Boromir coming to Rivendell and meeting Aragorn at the Council -- only to realize that he has met him before. That story can be found here: http://www.henneth-annun.net/stories/chapter.cfm?stid=8745
I'm looking forward to participating with some writing this month! I've got a few prompts that are tugging at me but inspiration hasn't fully struck yet.

Date: 2013-03-03 04:34 pm (UTC)I am an amateur singer in RL, and I sing Tolkien-related music when I get the chance. Sometimes whether it was meant to be Tolkien-related or not. Did you know that A Elbereth Gilthoniel scans to "O Come Emmanuel"? It totally does!

Date: 2013-03-03 05:41 pm (UTC)Oh! Yeah, I can totally see this, but it wouldn't have thought of it. 'O Come Emmanuel' has such a lovely melody. Love this correlation.

Date: 2013-03-03 06:07 pm (UTC)*nod* I really love the old carols. I'm hoping I can get a couple of friends to sing A Elbereth Gilthoniel with me in three-part harmony at the next song circle I go to. This may be too ambitious, but it is good to have a plan . . .

Date: 2013-03-03 06:42 pm (UTC)Hello! I'm Zeen, or
Hm, I guess I'd rec my space AU? It's Fingon/Maedhros IN SPACE, rated mature, approximately 15,000 words, (mostly because terrible things happen to them, but read the additional tags for additional information.)

Date: 2013-03-03 07:25 pm (UTC)I love taking part in BTME and making new friends as result as well as reading and writing stories.
My big enthusiasm is Aragorn and I love writing stories about his friendships and his love for Arwen. I especially enjoy reading/writing stories about the friendship between Aragorn and Faramir.
It is hard to choose a favourite from amongst my stories but amongst my favourites are "Carefully Taught" in which Aragorn and Faramir encounter a dragon

"The Healer's Journey" in which Aragorn learns to be a healer

"Through all the changing scenes of life" in which Aragorn loses Roheryn

Date: 2013-03-03 07:26 pm (UTC)My fandom passion and my RL passion actually overlap quite a bit. I am a teacher, and I have a poster on my classroom wall that (among other things) says, "Know that none are silent, though many are not heard." I sometimes wonder why I have poured so much time and so much of myself into this community for the last eight years, even when common sense would tell me to step aside for a while because of a sometimes wildly busy RL, and I think this is the crux of it: I believe in making it possible, to the fullest extent of my ability, for others to be heard. My love for Tolkien's works and transformative works based on them has inspired me to work to build open and supportive spaces for sharing creative works. The Silmarillion Writers' Guild is my online firstborn, founded back in March of 2005, but I also webmaster for Many Paths to Tread, am an adviser to the Stewards for the Tales of Middle Earth Awards, and of course, help to organize B2MeM each year. My fiction, as well, tends to tell the "other side of the story" or the story of characters who are in the background in the books.
In real life, I am a special educator and English teacher; I teach teenage boys with emotional disabilities, which takes up a huge amount of my time: just when the lesson-planning ends, the grading begins! I am also working on a Master's degree in the Humanities.
My favorites of my works are my novels, but if I were to recommend something short-ish of my own (I'm not exactly known for my brevity!) it would be Reembodied, the story of Tata and Tatië, the first of the Noldor to awaken at Cuivienen.

Date: 2013-03-03 07:32 pm (UTC)I'm not very good at the Self Promotion of the Shameless variety, but I've got a, erm, sparse collection of odds n' ends at SWG here: http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/archive/home/viewuser.php?uid=2 (http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/archive/home/viewuser.php?uid=2). Almost exclusively drabbles, because for a long time the majority of my Real Life consisted of writing 5k+ word non-fiction technical nonsense, so fics of any length were, sadly, right out. I am hoping to try and change that.
I am looking forward to reading what everyone comes up with for B2MeM this year!

Date: 2013-03-03 09:23 pm (UTC)I am primarily a Silmarillion writer. I’ve generally concentrated on Maglor and Elrond, and hope to write more about some of the women (especially Nerdanel, Indis, and Indis’ daughters) in the future. I write gen, het, femslash, and poly fic, though romance usually isn’t the focus.
From my own works, I’ll recommend Rise Again From Ashes, my “Maglor returns to Valinor in the Seventh Age” novel. For something shorter at just over a thousand words, A Kind of Poetry, my Finwë/Míriel/Indis story.

Date: 2013-03-03 09:29 pm (UTC)My current favorite among my own stories is my ambitious WIP, Eleventy-one Years: Too Short a Time which is my "biography" of Bilbo, from birth up until his leaving of the Shire for Rivendell. So far I have gotten him through the Fell Winter and into his tweens, and hope to begin updating again very soon.
I'm also a co-mod for the LOTR GenFic Community, including the Many Paths to Tread archive, the LOTR_GFIC_Community and

Date: 2013-03-03 09:53 pm (UTC)I'm interested in all things Tolkien, book or movie, but my particular fanfic interest focuses primarily on canon-based gen/het stories of the Dúnedain and the North in general, including Bree and Rivendell and the Shire. Aragorn, Halbarad, Elladan and Elrohir, Gandalf, and the Rivendell denizens are among my favorite characters, and lately I've developed a real fondness for writing stories with the Rangers interacting with hobbits and the folks in Bree--I'm currently working on a novel-length story where I'm trying to bring to life those Breelanders we know only by name. In "Homeward Bound" in ROTK, Butterbur relates that there were men and hobbits killed in Bree during the Ring War, and while the names are given, there's no detail about their lives. That bothers me, so I'm trying to give them voices of their own within my own universe. Back to my interest in the Dúnedain: in seeking to thoroughly understand them as a people, one has to look at the entire legendarium, from 1st Age to 4th, and all the peoples and races therein. So I may say my interest is in the Dúnedain, but it encompasses just about everything. Call it attempting a holistic approach, and I'm definitely learning as I go.
All of my published stories can be found at http://storiesofarda.com/author.asp?AuthID=2342, and selected ones at Naice a Nilme and Fanfiction.net. I also post a few things on my LJ that don't always make their way to the archives (like, um, last year's B2MeM fics, which are still languishing on the hard drive awaiting polishing. See note about Real Life!)
Looking forward to all the good reading!
