B2MeM 2013:: Day Three: Wildcard Day

It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door. You step into the Road, and if you don't keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to.
Throughout the month, we will offer weekly wildcard days, days when there are no new prompts but instead a simple, Tolkien-related task, for those who wish to participate. We hope wildcard days will give you a chance to refresh your muses, read, catch up on your WiPs, and breathe! :)
Our first wildcard day task: Step out your front door.
B2MeM is an event for the entire Tolkien fandom. Just look at what's been posted so far! All three major books are represented and characters ranging from Bilbo to Balrogs, Finrod to Faramir. Because of our diversity, though, we may not all know each other and we may define ourselves more by the communities from which we come rather than viewing B2MeM as itself a community. So, today, step out from your front door. Say hello and meet someone new. Lean out, take a look down the road, and ponder where it leads.
He used often to say there was only one Road; that it was like a great river: its springs were at every doorstep, and every path was its tributary.
To participate, leave a comment here and introduce yourself. Tell us the name you go by, what your passion is in fandom, and anything else about yourself that you want to share. Then, share a link to your favorite of the fanworks that you've created. (If you're new and don't have any fanworks yet, feel free to share a link to your favorite work by another author or artist.) The link you share does not have to be to a B2MeM piece; please make sure you include appropriate ratings and warnings if this won't be apparent when visitors click on the link.
After you've introduced yourself, take a moment to read/view another person's fanwork and leave them a comment to say hi and tell them what you thought.

Date: 2013-03-03 07:06 am (UTC)I am a hobbit fan and I enjoy reading hobbit fan fiction. I also like reading stories based on "The Hobbit" that involve the dwarves of Thorin's company.
Although I have written a few things, I don't enjoy recommending my own stuff, so I'm going to recommend someone else's work, since the instructions above give me the option to do that.
The story is a multi-chaptered, post-Quest, Lord of the Rings-based, g-rated, story with Merry Brandybuck and Pippin Took as the two central characters. The author has started her lovely story at the point where Merry receives word that King Eomer is ill and is requesting to see him one more time before he dies.
The story reads like a continuation of Tolkien's own work, and to this point, is faithful to the original. There are many OC's, including a wonderful young hobbit lad named Jamy and there are familiar characters from Tolkien's world as well. This is a story in progress, so if you decide to read it, keep in mind that the author, Elanor, is still working on it. It's called "A Secret Gate" and here is the link to the chapter list page. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Happy reading and happy B2ME month!

Date: 2013-03-03 07:26 am (UTC)I'm Kaylee Arafinwiel, or just Kaylee (or Kaylee Tonks-Lupin, in HP fandom, hence the LJ name, though I've mostly let my HP-ness go).
My passion, in the main, is Elves of all Ages and realms - particularly Doriath and Greenwood, and my favourites are Thranduil, Galadriel, Oropher, Celeborn and Legolas in that order. I am also fond of Gondor and Arnor, Rohan, Dwarven realms and the Shire, though I find Shire-fic and Dwarf-fic especially difficult to write. (By extension, Questfic is incredibly hard.)
It seems, however, that the central character for my B2MEM will be Rushirithir. For those of you who do not know me or my previous fics well, Rushirithir ("Fire-Light" in Valarin, as Fiondil translated) is my name for the Balrog of Moria. The fic where I originally explored his character was first posted on the lotr_community "Outside the Box" challenge for 2010, where it was called "The Life and Times of Rushirithir". I have reposted and slightly edited it on The Lizard Council, where it is simply "Rushirithir". http://lizardcouncil.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=arafinwielsanthology&action=display&thread=2360
Rushirithir, or "Rushy" for short (as my gwathel Sparx nicknamed him), has become one of my favourite characters to write. The first B2MEM 2013 bit about Rushy, "Three Maiar Walk Into A Bar..." is in the comments here: http://b2mem.livejournal.com/200004.html#comments and the second one is posted properly on the group, here. http://b2mem.livejournal.com/201754.html You might have seen them both already.
"Three Maiar Walk Into A Bar..." also vaguely refers back to "Not All Who Wander Are Lost..." my 2010 MEFA third place winner (and very first fic I ever won any kind of award for), here: http://www.lotrgfic.com/viewstory.php?sid=714 though you don't really have to have read it to enjoy it, I think.
Anyway, I love Fiondil's characterisation of the Maiar and Valar, and I have written them into other fics over the few years I've been involved in fandom. So I'm quite happy to play with Rushy for as long as he wants me to. ^_^
...was I just supposed to leave one link? hopefully a number of related links isn't overkill.
Oh yes - before I stop rambling a little tiny bit more about me. I'm nearly 28, American by birth and Anglophile by choice, though I have plenty of the 'old country' blood running through me :P (my grandfather was born in Cheshire in 1910 :) ) someday I want to live in the UK. The Hobbit part 1 is one of my favourite films ever and I have seen it twice. LOTR is my next favourite collectively and I think the Silmarillion/UT should form the basis of a TV series. I'm the only person in my immediate family who is into Tolkien fandom and many of my RL friends have the same sad issue :( I feel very alone until I switch on the computer, so...love you all =)
Hope I didn't talk too much...
Kaylee

Date: 2013-03-03 08:20 am (UTC)Elves are my obsession, specifically Elrond (which came as a surprise to me), Maglor, Finrod, and Fingolfin. Numenor has been creeping its way into my heart lately, too.
I don't have any work of my own I want to recommend. My list of favorites is pretty long, too, but my current beloved read is Anadûnai (http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/archive/home/viewstory.php?sid=631) by Darth Fingon, which hit at the heart of so many of the painful topics tied up with Elros and Elrond I'm interested in, while also cracking me up, as many of this author's stories do. There's a lot I like about it, which I should probably save for a review.
I'm sorry not to be more detailed now that I see everyone else's posts! I was hit with a surprise hand injury today, and that makes participating... complicated.

Date: 2013-03-03 11:38 am (UTC)I write under the name Amy Fortuna and I'm passionate about pretty much everything to do with Middle-earth and Tolkien. I'm more of a book fan than a movies fan - I enjoyed the movies and certainly do read fic about them, but they're like big-budget fanfic themselves to me - and I really like exploring the details and corners of the world Tolkien created. My preference is for slashfic and rarer ships. I think I may be the only person who has ever written Luthien/Galadriel.
My favourite of my own fanworks is a story I wrote a few years back for 3 Ships (a threesome fanfic exchange) with Aragorn/Boromir/Legolas. Unfortunately my recipient defaulted, but I was very happy with the story I'd written: Ever Northward Gaze (http://archiveofourown.org/works/321058) (rated M).
I also want to recommend the fic that was written for me in last year's Yuletide - not strictly Middle-earth, but certainly Tolkien - a fanfic for Smith of Wootton Major by Rachel Manija Brown: Queen of Berries (http://archiveofourown.org/works/554986) (rated G).
Really looking forward to seeing what B2MEM produces this year, perhaps if I have a chance or inspiration strikes, there will be something from myself at some point this month.

Date: 2013-03-03 02:02 pm (UTC)I have two of my own works that are dear to my heart that I would like to recommend. "Lords of Gondor" is my epic AU where Boromir survives the battle at Amon Hen and attempts the journey home to Gondor before war with Mordor breaks out. I started writing this one ten years ago, and in recent years have not been very prolific at updating, but I'm still working on it! It's my "life's work," so to speak. The most complete version of LoG can be found here: http://www.henneth-annun.net/stories/chapter.cfm?stid=4815
The other favorite is "Reforged," which is a tale of Boromir coming to Rivendell and meeting Aragorn at the Council -- only to realize that he has met him before. That story can be found here: http://www.henneth-annun.net/stories/chapter.cfm?stid=8745
I'm looking forward to participating with some writing this month! I've got a few prompts that are tugging at me but inspiration hasn't fully struck yet.

Date: 2013-03-03 07:25 pm (UTC)I love taking part in BTME and making new friends as result as well as reading and writing stories.
My big enthusiasm is Aragorn and I love writing stories about his friendships and his love for Arwen. I especially enjoy reading/writing stories about the friendship between Aragorn and Faramir.
It is hard to choose a favourite from amongst my stories but amongst my favourites are "Carefully Taught" in which Aragorn and Faramir encounter a dragon

"The Healer's Journey" in which Aragorn learns to be a healer

Date: 2013-03-03 07:26 pm (UTC)My fandom passion and my RL passion actually overlap quite a bit. I am a teacher, and I have a poster on my classroom wall that (among other things) says, "Know that none are silent, though many are not heard." I sometimes wonder why I have poured so much time and so much of myself into this community for the last eight years, even when common sense would tell me to step aside for a while because of a sometimes wildly busy RL, and I think this is the crux of it: I believe in making it possible, to the fullest extent of my ability, for others to be heard. My love for Tolkien's works and transformative works based on them has inspired me to work to build open and supportive spaces for sharing creative works. The Silmarillion Writers' Guild is my online firstborn, founded back in March of 2005, but I also webmaster for Many Paths to Tread, am an adviser to the Stewards for the Tales of Middle Earth Awards, and of course, help to organize B2MeM each year. My fiction, as well, tends to tell the "other side of the story" or the story of characters who are in the background in the books.
In real life, I am a special educator and English teacher; I teach teenage boys with emotional disabilities, which takes up a huge amount of my time: just when the lesson-planning ends, the grading begins! I am also working on a Master's degree in the Humanities.
My favorites of my works are my novels, but if I were to recommend something short-ish of my own (I'm not exactly known for my brevity!) it would be Reembodied, the story of Tata and Tatië, the first of the Noldor to awaken at Cuivienen.
For a great time, read this one!!

Date: 2013-03-03 07:32 pm (UTC)I'm not very good at the Self Promotion of the Shameless variety, but I've got a, erm, sparse collection of odds n' ends at SWG here: http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/archive/home/viewuser.php?uid=2 (http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/archive/home/viewuser.php?uid=2). Almost exclusively drabbles, because for a long time the majority of my Real Life consisted of writing 5k+ word non-fiction technical nonsense, so fics of any length were, sadly, right out. I am hoping to try and change that.
I am looking forward to reading what everyone comes up with for B2MeM this year!

Date: 2013-03-03 09:23 pm (UTC)I am primarily a Silmarillion writer. Iâve generally concentrated on Maglor and Elrond, and hope to write more about some of the women (especially Nerdanel, Indis, and Indisâ daughters) in the future. I write gen, het, femslash, and poly fic, though romance usually isnât the focus.
From my own works, Iâll recommend Rise Again From Ashes, my âMaglor returns to Valinor in the Seventh Ageâ novel. For something shorter at just over a thousand words, A Kind of Poetry, my FinwĂ«/MĂriel/Indis story.

Date: 2013-03-03 09:53 pm (UTC)I'm interested in all things Tolkien, book or movie, but my particular fanfic interest focuses primarily on canon-based gen/het stories of the DĂșnedain and the North in general, including Bree and Rivendell and the Shire. Aragorn, Halbarad, Elladan and Elrohir, Gandalf, and the Rivendell denizens are among my favorite characters, and lately I've developed a real fondness for writing stories with the Rangers interacting with hobbits and the folks in Bree--I'm currently working on a novel-length story where I'm trying to bring to life those Breelanders we know only by name. In "Homeward Bound" in ROTK, Butterbur relates that there were men and hobbits killed in Bree during the Ring War, and while the names are given, there's no detail about their lives. That bothers me, so I'm trying to give them voices of their own within my own universe. Back to my interest in the DĂșnedain: in seeking to thoroughly understand them as a people, one has to look at the entire legendarium, from 1st Age to 4th, and all the peoples and races therein. So I may say my interest is in the DĂșnedain, but it encompasses just about everything. Call it attempting a holistic approach, and I'm definitely learning as I go.
All of my published stories can be found at http://storiesofarda.com/author.asp?AuthID=2342, and selected ones at Naice a Nilme and Fanfiction.net. I also post a few things on my LJ that don't always make their way to the archives (like, um, last year's B2MeM fics, which are still languishing on the hard drive awaiting polishing. See note about Real Life!)
Looking forward to all the good reading!

Date: 2013-03-03 11:10 pm (UTC)I can be a meddler, so probably have fingers in more fannish pies than is good for me, but I post Tolkien-inspired photomanips at my deviantArt account (http://ladyelleth.deviantart.com/gallery/255609) and write Silmarillion fic. Sometimes I help out with projects as a graphics maker or something along those lines; a few of this year's prompt icons are mine. I also write Silmfic (http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/archive/home/viewuser.php?uid=10), do some betaing work and can't for the life of me point out something of mine that I'd recommend especially. Instead I'd like to rec In Neldoreth, the Muddy Season (http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/archive/home/viewstory.php?sid=1735) by new author PerpetuaLilium, a reconsideration of LĂșthien and Beren's meeting that I had the pleasure of betaing and that I think should get all the reviews.

Date: 2013-03-03 11:28 pm (UTC)I used to be a pretty active Silmarillion writer back in 2003-2007. Then I went on a long break, from which I have only just returned.
Most of my writing tends to be ironic, so either humour or angst with odd echoes. I have done my share of slashing, although nothing very explicit, but I have written gen and het, too.
I tend to gravitate to... second-tier First-Age Elves? By which I mean, not the assorted royals, but the notable heroes who serve them. My main setting was Gondolin, with all those heroic (and unheroic) captains, but the fic I am going to recommend is set in Doriath, and revolves around a rather clueless Beleg: here (http://archiveofourown.org/works/690253) it is, at AO3.
And yes, it is humour, and slash -- or at least potential slash.
I feel I should mention that, while I write humour, I do take the craft of writing seriously. Too seriously for my own good, really.

Date: 2013-03-04 12:07 am (UTC)I love everything about Tolkien's world, and I try my hand in writing as many races, eras, characters, and pairings as I can. I feel most comfortable with elves and dwarves, although I have written some with Men (still not feeling as though I got a handle on hobbits yet.) I have a fondness for dwarves. Admittedly while liking them I never ventured too deep in researching them until the first Hobbit film was released. Now it seems the dwarves, and particularly Bofur and KĂli, have occupied my mind. In RL I work in health care, but I occasionally take on freelance graphic design projects for book covers. Before studying science I was an art student, and I try to keep all of my passions balanced (doesn't always work out, unfortunately!) I am also deep at work on my own fictional universe which has its own self-contained mythology.
Of my own works I don't know which to recommend, really. I tend to be critical of what I write, and I am surprised whenever I piece I'm iffy on ends up being popular (such as this one (http://archiveofourown.org/works/636729).) But I am still fond of The Cave in the Echoriath (http://iavalir.livejournal.com/6275.html), and it gives a feel for the sort of horror I enjoy writing (my most current horror piece, KĂli's Lover (http://iavalir.livejournal.com/66776.html), is slanted more towards gore (and warnings for death, graphic violence, and abuse.)) I am still proud of the first chapter of Amras and the Elements (http://iavalir.livejournal.com/25940.html) and plan to finish it. Ăowyn the Passion Heart (http://iavalir.livejournal.com/19736.html) is perhaps my favorite of my Man-centric stories. A project I have been working on involves a crossover with Doctor Who, in which Curufin is The Doctor. So look out for that if you enjoy some fandom fusion! :)

Date: 2013-03-04 12:08 am (UTC)I've been a Tolkien fan to one extent or another for - um - nearly 40 years? I actually got involved with fanfic through the Buffyverse, but gently moved sideways back to Middle Earth in the past five years. I write mainly Elf-centred Fourth Age stories - a long series that started at the end of the Ring War and has now reached The West about 150 years later. I post my long stories at Faerie and TtH, drabbles at Many Paths to Tread, and a mixture of longer stories and drabbles at HASA. I write mainly book-verse with the occasional shout out to the films where it works for my purposes!
I also write drabbles - I have hardly missed a week at
I have been fascinated by the wonderful works that are inspired by B2MEM each year - even though I have still never written to any of the prompts... I don't seem to be able to cope with prompts for anything longer than a drabble. But I will try, honestly!
In the meantime - things I am happy with - The Long Road Home (http://www.lotrgfic.com/viewstory.php?sid=2160) - CelebrĂan is not only Galadriel's daughter, but also Celeborn's, of course. Drabble set looking at their relationship through the lens of her journey to, and sojourn in, Valinor.
A Powerful Absence (http://efiction.esteliel.de/viewstory.php?sid=734) - A simple accident, some years after the end of the Ring War, leaves one of the sons of Elrond coping with life in Middle Earth without his twin.
Brotherhood (http://efiction.esteliel.de/viewstory.php?sid=406) - set in my long series this is a 'Returnverse' tale of travel, discovery, orcs, angst, intrigue, kidnap... and occasional sex.
Oh - and I am on the organising group for WriterconUK (http://writerconuk.livejournal.com/) - a small, friendly multi-fandom group who meet annually.

Date: 2013-03-04 01:44 am (UTC)Given the choice, I would be a Gondorian. My heart belongs to the realms of men, and most particularly to the House of the Stewards and their loyal defense of Gondor. I sometimes wander back into Numenor or west into Rohan or Arnor, but Minas Tirith always draws me back. More than anyone else, Faramir is my favorite character to write.
I have not been writing this fandom all that long yet, but one story I'm quite proud of is "We Shall Stand." It's here: http://almaheart.livejournal.com/3156.html (http://almaheart.livejournal.com/3156.html). It is a story I wrote on a challenge about Boromir I, Steward of Gondor, and his son Cirion. The fic is rated T for battle and character death, and shows a snippet of the man whom the Witch King feared, and for whom the Boromir of the Fellowship was named.
I also art, though I only have two Tolkien related pieces online just now. They can be found on deviantart under the name Heartsart
In terms of things I did not write, I adore lindahoyland's stories. Just all of them. She got me into this fandom in the first place. :) Thank you, Linda.
Other than that...um...I am so excited to be doing this again (last year was my first year). Hope everyone has kind muses, and happy reading and writing!

Now for SSP: I have a few longer works going on (for a number of years *ahem*), and though I love all my children equally well, the nearest and dearest to my heart is Unto the ending of the world (http://www.henneth-annun.net/stories/chapter.cfm?stid=7028)(long; dark AU: Sauron regains the Ring; ongoing; warning: major and multiple character deaths, though not too graphic).
Two shorter stories that I particularly like are Spindrift (http://www.henneth-annun.net/stories/chapter.cfm?stid=8011) (Elendil, no warnings), and ... I'd better leave it at the one, since I'm now starting to think Help, I do like them all... well, most of them anyway...

Date: 2013-03-04 11:32 pm (UTC)I am Himring (with one H or two, depending on whether anyone else got there first).
I'm a Silmarillion writer and obsessed with Maedhros, but have been occasionally known to take an interest in other people and things Tolkien.
I took part in B2MeM last year and also the year before. Here's one of last year's posts:
