B2MeM 2013 Day Seven

Note: I owe the title of "Desperate Entwives" to a comment overread somewhere in last year's B2MeM madness. Unfortunately, I forgot to note the name of the genius who coined that phrase, so if it was you, please speak up so I can credit properly!

I have crossed many mountains and many rivers, and trodden many plains, even into the far countries of Rhûn and Harad where the stars are strange.

Throughout the month, we will offer weekly wildcard days, days when there are no new prompts but instead a simple, Tolkien-related task, for those who wish to participate. We hope wildcard days will give you a chance to refresh your muses, read, catch up on your WiPs, and breathe! :)

Our fourth and penultimate wildcard day task: Go where the stars are strange.

We all have our favorites, our stories, characters, and sources that are both comfortable and familiar: the character whose name alone will make us click on a story, the authors whom we read everything they write, the chapters and books most dog-eared and worn from use. For today’s wildcard task, however, we challenge you to wander outside this comfort zone and try something new.

You might try reading a story about a character you don’t normally like, or check out an essay or a story about a topic you know very little about. Venture outside the time period you usually read and write about, or read a chapter or essay in one of Tolkien’s books that you’ve never read before. Explore the work of a new author or artist. Learn something new, try something different, journey someplace unfamiliar--as always, you decide what counts for this challenge, and we encourage you to be creative. If you want to share what you've done for today's challenge, feel free to leave a comment on this post.

Therefore when they beheld them, the more did they love them, being things other than themselves, strange and free, wherein they saw the mind of Ilúvatar reflected anew, and learned yet a little more of his wisdom …

Here is a VERY late entry; it is late for the [livejournal.com profile] lotr_community March 2012 challenge; it is late for the January 2013 potluck and it is late for the 2012 B2MeM Bingo Challenge. It was finished, mostly, for yesterday's B2MeM Wildcard challenge to finish something. I cleaned it up today for posting, and then got a bunch of formatting errors when I previewed, so now it is even later.

Genre:
Rating: G
Warnings: Canonical character death
Characters: Denethor, OC
Pairings: Denethor/Finduilas
Summary: A last farewell to Finduilas from one of her handmaidens.

Note: Sneaking in (sneaking, Precious) with another thing that I somehow didn't finish editing and post last year (though it's only 200 words, so I don't know what my excuse was. Maybe I didn't want to think of a title?). I hope seeing those Bingo card prompts again doesn't give anyone bad memories.

B2MeM Challenge: Wildcard (finish something)
Format: short story (2150 words)
Genre: gen
Rating: T
Warnings: Emotional mistreatment/attempted harm to children, mention of human sacrifice, generally dark tone
Characters: Tar-Míriel, Sauron, OCs
Pairings: none
Summary: What the Queen does and leaves undone, the day before the Downfall of Númenor. The Armada sets sail, and Míriel waits for the shape of their doom to reveal itself.

Notes: I originally wrote (most of) this for the “seduction” prompt back in B2MeM 2011 (!) but I didn’t manage to finish and post it until now. *hangs head* (The seduction is not physical, in case anyone is concerned by looking at the character list!) But it could fit under this year’s prompts for Day Four (Ban of the Valar) and Day Five (Castle of the Sea/the Armada), and I really want to use the lovely icons, so I will say that it does. I think it also fits in with Dawn’s mention of Isildur in today’s task, with the theme of not quite doing things in time.

The Ruling Ring passed out of the knowledge even of the Wise in that age; yet it was not unmade. For Isildur would not surrender it to Elrond and Círdan who stood by. They counselled him to cast it into the fire of Orodruin nigh at hand, in which it had been forged, so that it should perish, and the power of Sauron be for ever diminished, and he should remain only as a shadow of malice in the wilderness.

Chances are you've had a moment like this: gone the distance, gotten to the very edge ... and failed to finish what you started.

Throughout the month, we will offer weekly wildcard days, days when there are no new prompts but instead a simple, Tolkien-related task, for those who wish to participate. We hope wildcard days will give you a chance to refresh your muses, read, catch up on your WiPs, and breathe! :)

Our third wildcard day task: Finish something.

While completing that dusty WiP or finally commenting on that story you've read five times and absolutely love hardly have the gravity of finishing off the One Ring inside Mount Doom, we all know we have our minor Isildur moments ("Umm ... weregild. Yes, right, weregild!") when we have something we know we should and, maybe, deep down inside want to do--and yet don't.

Participants today should finish something related to their fannish participation. This can be as ambitious as finally completing that long-enduring WiP or as simple as leaving a comment on a story you've always meant to express your admiration for, finishing that final copyedit, getting a piece posted to your journal or archive, or reading that story on your wish list that you never seem to have time for. As always, you decide what counts for this challenge, and we encourage you to be creative. If you want to share what you've done for today's challenge, feel free to leave a comment on this post.

So chase off those spoon-thieving relatives, find a cozy place to settle in, and use today to finish something!

'Well, I've made up my mind, anyway. I want to see mountains again, Gandalf, mountains, and then find somewhere where I can rest. In peace and quiet, without a lot of relatives prying around, and a string of confounded visitors hanging on the bell. I might find somewhere where I can finish my book.

Athelas they named it, and it grows now sparsely and only near places where they dwelt or camped of old; and it is not known in the North, except to some of those who wander in the Wild. It has great virtues …

Throughout the month, we will offer weekly wildcard days, days when there are no new prompts but instead a simple, Tolkien-related task, for those who wish to participate. We hope wildcard days will give you a chance to refresh your muses, read, catch up on your WiPs, and breathe! :)

Our second wildcard day task: Stop and smell the athelas.

All of us came here from more or less the same place. We picked up a book or maybe went to see a movie. We found ourselves in a new world, from which we have not yet been able to fully return.

Today, we stop and remember what brought us here. Maybe there was a chapter, a passage, a scene, a character--something that grabbed your hand or your heart and has never let go. For today’s wildcard task, choose your favorite chapter from Tolkien and reread it.

Still it smells sweet when bruised, does it not? If sweet is the right word: wholesome, maybe, is nearer.

If you wish to participate in today’s wildcard day, you don’t have to do anything special besides rereading your favorite chapter. Of course, if you want to say more about what you chose or how you came to love Tolkien, do feel free to comment here or make a post to this community.

It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door. You step into the Road, and if you don't keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to.

Throughout the month, we will offer weekly wildcard days, days when there are no new prompts but instead a simple, Tolkien-related task, for those who wish to participate. We hope wildcard days will give you a chance to refresh your muses, read, catch up on your WiPs, and breathe! :)

Our first wildcard day task: Step out your front door.

B2MeM is an event for the entire Tolkien fandom. Just look at what's been posted so far! All three major books are represented and characters ranging from Bilbo to Balrogs, Finrod to Faramir. Because of our diversity, though, we may not all know each other and we may define ourselves more by the communities from which we come rather than viewing B2MeM as itself a community. So, today, step out from your front door. Say hello and meet someone new. Lean out, take a look down the road, and ponder where it leads.

He used often to say there was only one Road; that it was like a great river: its springs were at every doorstep, and every path was its tributary.

To participate, leave a comment here and introduce yourself. Tell us the name you go by, what your passion is in fandom, and anything else about yourself that you want to share. Then, share a link to your favorite of the fanworks that you've created. (If you're new and don't have any fanworks yet, feel free to share a link to your favorite work by another author or artist.) The link you share does not have to be to a B2MeM piece; please make sure you include appropriate ratings and warnings if this won't be apparent when visitors click on the link.

After you've introduced yourself, take a moment to read/view another person's fanwork and leave them a comment to say hi and tell them what you thought.
