B2MeM Challenge: B2MeM 2013 B, Day 4: "Down the swift dark stream you go / Back to lands you once did know..." and I, Day 12: “For it seemed to her a thing strange and crooked in him, as indeed the Eldar ever since have deemed it: an evil fruit of the Kinslaying, whereby the shadow of the curse of Mandos fell upon the last hope of the Noldor.”
Format: ficlet
Genre: het, I guess?
Rating: T
Warnings: none
Characters: Idril, Maeglin
Pairings: Maeglin/Idril (one-sided), Idril/Tuor
Creators' Notes: I once saw a picture of Tuor wearing his white-winged helmet, and it got me to thinking about similarities between him and the Swan Knight Lohengrin from Wagner’s opera. This fic is partly inspired by a scene in Lohengrin where the sorceress Ortrud tries to make Elsa doubt Lohengrin on the eve of her wedding to him. The title is taken from a line in that scene.
Summary: Idril has a troubling encounter with her cousin Maeglin on the morning of her betrothal to Tuor.

B2MeM Challenge: Wildcard (finish something)
Format: short story (2150 words)
Genre: gen
Rating: T
Warnings: Emotional mistreatment/attempted harm to children, mention of human sacrifice, generally dark tone
Characters: Tar-Míriel, Sauron, OCs
Pairings: none
Summary: What the Queen does and leaves undone, the day before the Downfall of Númenor. The Armada sets sail, and Míriel waits for the shape of their doom to reveal itself.

Notes: I originally wrote (most of) this for the “seduction” prompt back in B2MeM 2011 (!) but I didn’t manage to finish and post it until now. *hangs head* (The seduction is not physical, in case anyone is concerned by looking at the character list!) But it could fit under this year’s prompts for Day Four (Ban of the Valar) and Day Five (Castle of the Sea/the Armada), and I really want to use the lovely icons, so I will say that it does. I think it also fits in with Dawn’s mention of Isildur in today’s task, with the theme of not quite doing things in time.

Title: Ainulindalë
Author: Dwimordene
Rating: T-ish?
Prompts: Day 1: Archetype, Loss of Innocence; Day 4: Down the Swift Dark Stream You Go/Back To Lands You Once Did Know; Personal Insanity Challenge: Huinare’s Socrates prompt (sort of… contextually, I think I have it) combined with the Unity prompt, Aliana’s prompt combo (look, look, genocide doesn’t specifically come up – this totally counts! ;-D )
Warnings: Er… kind of… not the clearest or most poetic thing I’ve ever written about these two. See also summary.
Characters: Nienna, Melkor (Eru sort of)
Summary: It’s all just a Freudian love-fest down here. Update: Now with 3 drabbles’ worth of notes (Help! Somebody stop me, it’s a sickness…).

Ainulindale )

Notes: 1. The Ainulindalë focuses primarily on the contest between Melkor and Eru, but the other Ainur are never wholly silent until the start of the Fourth Theme, which shuts even Melkor up. Focusing on the fact that the others still sing opened space for me for a more complex, brother-sister interaction sustained simultaneously, particularly since in the First Theme and the Second, some Ainur are drawn to Melkor or confused by him, and drift closer to him before being pulled away again as they tune to Ilúvatar’s interventions. Nienna not tuning her song to Melkor’s but remaining face to face with him throughout is a relationship drawn from Emmanuel Levinas’s work – again (one trick pony!).

2. From being comes existence.: It’s Melkor, Nienna, and Levinas, which means that Heidegger has to be here, since it’s all about the fall…

3. The line that Eru raises his hands in the Third Theme comes from the text: Ilúvatar ends the Third Theme and begins the Fourth by raising both his hands. The most obvious interpretation of this gesture, combined with what Eru sings, is to say that it means “Stop”; but to me, the gesture also evokes the line “laying on of hands,” and so memories of priests laying both hands on or over a child or someone sick in order to bless the person, or holding both hands over the broken Host to hallow it. Obviously, then, Ilúvatar needs someone or something to bless, and why not Melkor and Nienna and their struggle, which will play out throughout the entirety of the Fourth Theme?

4. That barrel song: it’s so much more cheerful than the lines suggest! I had forgotten about that – it’s like a nursery rhymne, full of you know not what threatening or horrifying aspects until you get old enough to start paying attention to the lyrics. Good job, B2MEM crew, your ploy is working!

In the Bleak and Early Morn

B2MeM Challenge: Day One: Archetypes; Day Two: Good and Ill; Day Four: Back to lands you once did know
Format: Short Story (ca. 3,000 words)
Genre: Character Study/Angst/Drama
Rating: Teens
Warnings: Non-graphic mentions of sex and nudity, hints at possible domestic violence, alcoholism, and mentions of general violence of the kinslaying variety.
Characters: Maglor, Lasbaneth (OFC)
Pairings: Maglor/Lasbaneth
Summary: Maglor's wife, a Sinda of Mithrim, learns about the events of Alqualondë, and confronts her husband about his actions, differing beliefs, and the future.

Notes: I took some liberties with the Laws and Customs in this story that challenge the ideas on marriage put forward in the original text, but tried to avoid making a decisive statement on which idea is "right". Tolkien did, after all, allow the caveat that different Elven cultures had different approaches (the Mithrim Sindar in my verse are based on Eurasian nomads; the station Lasbaneth is referred to as having is roughly analogous to that of a shaman, though none of that is more than background information here). However, if any of the above isn't your cup of tea, please steer clear of this story.

Lasbaneth uses Sindarin at times (goelydh is the Sindarin form for the Noldor, with a pejorative undertone), Maglor uses Quenya unless the personal names he refers to are in Sindarin. Noldóranis means Queen of the Noldor, the hypothetical female form of Finwë's original title, celvar are animals, Hecelmar, literally Land of the Forsaken, is a Quenya name for Beleriand and references the Elves who did not sail. Naucalië translates to Dwarf-folk.

The title of the story is from Rogue Valley's The Wolves and the Ravens (which is quite a Maglor song in itself, though lends itself better to his lamenting by the sea), and I'd like to thank Zeen for having a look at this; any remaining mistakes are my own.
